Windows

iTunes COM for Windows SDK
You'll need this if you want create or modify any scripts for iTunes for Windows. As long as you have an Apple ID you can log into the Developer Downloads page, and type iTunes into the search window-on the left. The entry for iTunes COM for Windows SDK should be in the list of search results. If you cannot use the link try this alternate version online.

iTunes Folder Watch
A tool for updating iTunes with files you've added or removed from your computer independently of iTunes. It can either be run manually or set to run automatically as a task bar process.

MediaMonkey
A light & fast alternative media manager with some quite useful organisational features. Plays & tags a wide range of audio formats. Auto-Tag from Web may help correct mistakes/omissions in your tags. Auto-Organize Files allows you to use your own naming conventions and folder structure rather than those imposed by iTunes, Windows Media Player etc.

MusicBrainz Picard
You're trying to clean up your library and you come across some obscure untagged file that you just can't identify... The Picard Tagger will attempt to construct an audio fingerprint of your track and compare it with an online database. A bit like Shazam, but for your PC and can work with multiple tracks.

Notepad++
A free source code editor and Notepad replacement that supports several programming languages, in particular vbScript, which I use for developing my iTunes for Windows Scripts.

SyncToy 2.1
A tool to synchronise pairs of folders, an ideal way to create a backup of your entire media library and keep it up-to-date.
